Before automobiles, if one did not own a horse or wagon, one could walk, hire a private wagon called a hack, or take the the street railway. This railway was comprised of horse or mule drawn streetcarts until electric trolleys were introduced in 1901. Stables were needed to house the dozen or so animals and the 12 streetcarts, which is depicted in this illustration. The horses and the mules averaged 22 miles a day each, and were fed at 3a.m., 10:30a.m., 4:30p.m., and 9p.m. daily. At first the fare was 5 cents a ride, which would get you from the Depot to the Plaza. This wooden structure was replaced by one of the last buildings in Las Vegas erected using local sandstone.
