Felix Martinez started the La Voz Del Pueblo, or Voice of the People, in 1889 in Santa Fe, moving to Las Vegas in 1890. He built a print shop on Douglas Ave., in 1892, for his newspaper that was printed in Spanish. Later this stone and brick building was constructed next to the first print shop.
Martinez, with his assistants Antonio Lucero, and Ezekial C. de Baca, both later becoming important politicians in the State of New Mexico, went up against the Republican bosses, essentially founding the Populist Party. The Populist's platform sided with Las Gorras Blancas and others disgruntled by land grant issues. The paper also stood for, "bilingual education and recognition of Spanish-American contributions and leadership."* In the late 90's they published poems motivating many readers to contribute their own poems.
This building was torn down to make room for a gas station.
