The Sisters of Loretto, including Sisters Eulalia and Fidelis, were persuaded by Bishop Lamy to accompany him from Cincinnati west across the Santa Fe Trail to New Mexico, locating in Albuquerque in 1852.
In 1869 the Sisters of Loretto established the first school in Las Vegas, moving into a building donated by Rumaldo Baca. By 1875, they again moved their convent and school, into their new building above. The design was a Spanish U-shape adobe building, forming a courtyard in the rear, with Territorial trim and apparently Don Rumaldo Baca's personal touch; the inclusion of small wooden dormer windows, which were also incorporated in the design of his buiding and his uncle's mansion in Upper Las Vegas.
The Sisters and the Jesuits were the pioneers of education in Las Vegas.
This building was destroyed by fire.
